MACHINE HEAD - Robb Flynn interview @Linea Rock 2018 by Barbara Caserta

On October 23rd 2017 Mr ROBB FLYNN paid a visit to our studios in Milano to present MACHINE HEAD’s new album “Catharsis” which will be released January 26th 2018 on Nuclear Blast: Barbara Caserta was as always at the forefront to welcome him! This is MH 9th album in 25 years, and again it took a while to be made: so we broke the ice on the fact that there’s always been a gap of 3 years in between each new album… And why “Catharsis” (the song) is the perfect title track for the mood, groove, melody and meaning of this new album delivering pure american heavy metal to the bone? This record in Robb’s words “is putting Metal back to its nature, to that major scenario”, his point of view is pretty clear… so is there any past album which is closest to the spirit and sound of this eclectic new one? He describes this album as “epic Machine Head”, someway weird, deep but also ironic the Motorhead way! Discover yourself how and why… We also talk about how much songwriting is still a team effort in a jam room for MH, always lead by the leader of course, just like his idea of co-production (this time a cooperation between Flynn and Zack Ohren). And how having back the “holy grail” (that guitar that Robb was given by Dimebag Darrell which got stolen and he had finally back after 7 years) influenced the whole music vibe? We dig into the social-themes-thing and into the “music has to take a position” issue (a là Black Sabbath, forget about Bruno Mars!) and the responsabilities that come with it, discussing also the “Phil Anselmo White Trash incident” which created a huge and strong backlash on Robb after that famous open heart video "Racism In Metal" he made as a sincere and very intense response… he even talks about death threats he got, scary… and did all that happened affect the writing of the new lyrics someway? Then, guess which is the ultimate pop band for Robb? About the changing-line-ups matter, he has got a very clear idea and apparently he doesn’t miss any ex partner, in life as in music… Robb was born in Oakland, the home of the legendary “Day On The Green Festival”, which saw all the big names on stage during the 70s and 80s: he happened to be there for the 1985 edition, even thou his baptism of fire came way before that, in a 250 seats tiny bar, which became his “Beatles at Ed Sullivan Moment” and it has something to do with a certain band called Metallica, and not only… Then we got some anticipations on the next tour, which will be another MH full immersion type night, coming to Italy April 2018! Last but not least, the 1 billion dollars question: since 1991 when Robb quit Vio-Lence and Forbidden to follow his path and inspiration, did he accomplish everything he wanted?
