Mr. Wang Sammoonram, or "Uncle Wang," a 77-year-old man from Chumphon Province, spent more than half his life battling alcohol. Today, he has successfully quit and become a role model in his community. Uncle Wang started drinking at the age of 17-18. Initially, he drank to relieve fatigue after hard work, but over time, he became addicted. He would drive around looking for bars, beg for drinks, buy some, or even sign for it, until alcohol became an integral part of his life. A major turning point occurred when his wife, with whom he had been married for many years, died of an overdose in the bathroom after drinking alcohol. Doctors determined the cause of death was alcohol. This tragedy deeply saddened Uncle Wang and fueled his determination to quit drinking, because he didn't want alcohol to take any more lives. Although the initial stages of quitting were filled with suffering, anxiety, and constant cravings, a crucial turning point came when an officer from the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHPF) spoke with Uncle Wang and asked, "Do you want to live?" This short question propelled Uncle Wang to fight against his own addiction. With encouragement from community members who visited and talked to him every day, he successfully quit drinking. After quitting, Uncle Wang's health improved. He is free from illness. From someone the villagers once shunned, he became someone everyone loves and respects. His children and grandchildren admire him. The community even joined together to help repair his house, and several organizations invited him to share his experience to inspire those trying to quit drinking and to warn others not to repeat his mistakes. Today, Uncle Wang is determined not to touch alcohol again. Even if someone offers him alcohol or 1,000 baht to relapse, he will refuse. He believes his life today is more valuable than returning to his old ways. He wants to use his remaining time to help the community and dreams of receiving funding to repair his house.
