Can Instagram Save the Photo Essay?

In this video, I’m exploring a bit of a "twist" on how to use Instagram for documentary photography. After a recent 6-hour assignment for The Sunday Times photographing pilgrims in Kent, I ended up with over 100 final photos and only for two that made it into print. With no agency representation for secondary sales, I decided to experiment with Instagram’s updated 20-photo carousel feature. Is this the new home for the classic 20-image photo essay? I’ll walk you through my edit, the "establishing shots," and why this format might actually be the best way to bypass the "bangers only" culture of Instagram.
