ഒഥല്ലോ വലിയ വീരനായകനാണ്. പക്ഷേ, വെനീസിലെ സമൂഹത്തിൽ അയാൾ എപ്പോഴും ഒരു അന്യനാണ്. ആ ഒരു ബലഹീനത ആണ് ഇയാഗോ ചൂഷണം ചെയ്യുന്നത്. കഥാസംഗ്രഹം : വെനീസിലെ സൈന്യത്തിലെ പ്രഗത്ഭനായ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനും 'മൂർ' (Moor - ആഫ്രിക്കൻ വംശജൻ) വംശജനുമായ ഒഥല്ലോയും, വെനീസിലെ പ്രഭുകന്യകയായ ഡെസ്ഡിമോണയും തമ്മിലുള്ള പ്രണയവും വിവാഹവുമാണ് കഥയുടെ പശ്ചാത്തലം. എന്നാൽ ഒഥല്ലോയുടെ കീഴിൽ ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്ന ഇയാഗോ എന്ന വില്ലൻ കഥാഗതിയെ മാറ്റിമറിക്കുന്നു. തനിക്ക് ലഭിക്കേണ്ടിയിരുന്ന പദവി കാസിയോ എന്ന ചെറുപ്പക്കാരന് ഒഥല്ലോ നൽകിയതിലുള്ള പകയാണ് ഇയാഗോയെ നയിക്കുന്നത്. ഒഥല്ലോയെ തകർക്കാൻ ഇയാഗോ ഒരു ക്രൂരമായ ചതിച്ചരട് നെയ്യുന്നു. ഡെസ്ഡിമോണയ്ക്ക് കാസിയോയുമായി അവിഹിതബന്ധമുണ്ടെന്ന് ഇയാഗോ ഒഥല്ലോയെ വിശ്വസിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ഡെസ്ഡിമോണയ്ക്ക് ഒഥല്ലോ സമ്മാനിച്ച ഒരു റൂമാൽ (Handkerchief) തന്ത്രപൂർവ്വം കൈക്കലാക്കി കാസിയോയുടെ മുറിയിൽ കൊണ്ടിട്ടാണ് ഇയാഗോ ഈ കള്ളക്കഥ സത്യമാണെന്ന് വരുത്തിത്തീർക്കുന്നത്. സംശയത്താൽ അന്ധനായ ഒഥല്ലോ ഒടുവിൽ സ്വന്തം കിടപ്പറയിൽ വെച്ച് നിരപരാധിയായ ഡെസ്ഡിമോണയെ ശ്വാസം മുട്ടിച്ച് കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. പിന്നീട് ഇയാഗോയുടെ ഭാര്യയായ എമീലിയയിലൂടെയാണ് ചതിയുടെ ചുരുളഴിയുന്നത്. താൻ ചെയ്ത മഹാപാപമറിഞ്ഞ് തകർന്നപോയ ഒഥല്ലോ ഒടുവിൽ സ്വയം ജീവനൊടുക്കുന്നു. Story in Brief: The story takes place in Venice and Cyprus. It follows Othello, a powerful and respected Moorish (African) general in the Venetian army, who has secretly married Desdemona, a beautiful and noble Venetian lady. The tragedy is set in motion by Iago, Othello’s ensign. Bitter about being passed over for a promotion in favor of the younger Cassio, Iago vows revenge. He devises a malicious plan to destroy Othello by making him believe that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio. Through brilliant psychological manipulation and the clever planting of a misplaced token (a cherished handkerchief given to Desdemona by Othello), Iago completely infects Othello’s mind with insane jealousy. Consumed by rage and heartbreak, Othello smothers Desdemona in her bed. Shortly after, Iago’s wife, Emilia, discovers the truth and exposes her husband's villainy.
