Lewis, the famous author of The Chronicles of Narnia and professor of literature at Oxford and Cambridge, poses a radical challenge: not to judge books by what critics say, but by how they are read. In this episode of The Apprentice's Notes, we explore Lewis's essay on the experience of reading. You'll discover that a good reader isn't someone who reads to show off their culture, but rather someone who allows reading to transform and expand their being. Lewis teaches us that most of us live trapped within our own perspective, seeing the world only through the filter of our own interests. True literature (the "power reading") is the only tool that allows us to see with different eyes, imagine with different imaginations, and feel with different hearts. You'll learn to distinguish between the vices of the "non-literary" reader—who reads only for the plot or gossip—and the virtues of the "literary reader," for whom the first reading of a great work can be as impactful an experience as love or religion. In this video you'll discover: 00:00 - Introduction: C.S. Lewis and the experience of reading. 02:20 - The experiment: Judging books by their readers, not by the critics. 03:05 - The two types of readers: Literary Readers vs. Non-Literary Readers. 06:00 - Why do we read? Informational Literature vs. Literary Power. 08:00 - The ultimate goal: Expanding our being and escaping the "prison" of the self. 12:00 - What NOT to look for in literature (Status, Self-Help, and Mirrors). 15:12 - The 7 vices of the "Non-Literary Reader" (Plot-focused, lack of ear, no rereading). 24:21 - The habits of the "Literary Reader": Rereading, silence, and reception. #TheApprenticeNotes #CSLewis #Reading #PersonalDevelopment #Literature #TheApprenticeNotes #ReadBetter ⚫ Subscribe to the channel https://bit.ly/3JZFHNa ⚫ Book: The Art of Living Like a Stoic https://amzn.to/3NhQNiR ⚫ To receive more content like this for FREE (and exclusive), subscribe to my Newsletter: https://www.notasaprendiz.com/newslet... ⚫ Want to experience more joy, better health, and live longer?
