Democratic socialists gain influence as party debates its future

Democratic socialists continue to rack up wins in major urban areas in contests that will soon send aligned candidates to Washington, expanding their influence beyond heavily left-leaning cities. A trio of candidates endorsed by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani won Democratic primary races Tuesday night in New York, all of whom defeated candidates backed by the party’s establishment. Two of them toppled sitting members of Congress in a sign of strength for the progressive wing of the party and potential warning shot to established incumbents. The victories came in heavily Democratic districts where the primary is the decisive election, meaning democratic socialists are essentially guaranteed to head to Congress next year even as questions remain about whether the movement can replicate that success in battleground districts. It is the latest in a growing series of wins for the insurgent left wing of the Democratic Party that has pushed for a complete overhaul after losing the White House and control of Congress in 2024 and grown more frustrated at Democrats’ inability to stand in the way of President Donald Trump’s agenda.
