Associations, members of parliament, and detainees are sounding the alarm and denouncing arbitrary and even illegal detentions as well as inhumane living conditions. CRAs are the state's tool for detaining illegal immigrants. In 2023, associations counted 45,000 people detained in these centers in France. This figure is constantly increasing. In mainland France, 59% of the 16,000 people detained were eventually released after 2 or 3 months in detention. 35% were sent back to another country. On Friday, September 24, Ersillia Soudais and Aurélien Taché, LFI MPs, decided to conduct a parliamentary visit to the Mesnil-Amelot detention center in Seine-et-Marne. We accompanied them. The detainees report seeing people being duct-taped and forcibly taken to the airport. Between this fear, the noise of airplanes (being next to Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport), and the nighttime disturbances caused by people lacking psychological care, the detainees report no longer sleeping. They also describe disastrous hygiene conditions. The detainees also complain of a lack of medical care. This evidence is corroborated by the associations on site and/or our images. The very fact of detaining people for their administrative status raises questions. Detainees and associations denounce arbitrary and/or abusive detention. Several testimonies are coming together: a man is imprisoned after 20 years in France for a delayed renewal of his residence permit; another was arrested leaving work and left his child behind; yet another was imprisoned after leaving prison for not having a permit; a young man has been in France since he was 3 and denounces state racism... Furthermore, some of the detainees are from Haiti or Afghanistan. Sending a national back to a country where their life is in danger violates the European Convention on Human Rights, to which France is a signatory. When contacted, the Ministry of the Interior and the prefecture of the 77 department did not respond. Report. Subject: Lisa Lap and Andreï Manivit. Editing: Lorenzo.
