Rabbi David Halevi Segal, known as Taz, was one of the greatest poskims of the 17th century. One day, tired of the honors that prevented him from concentrating on his studies, he left his hometown with his wife to settle in a place where no one knew him. In this new city, he relished anonymity, studied intensely, and lived like a simple Jew. But to support himself, he took a modest job at the local slaughterhouse, as a menaker, responsible for removing forbidden parts from meat. His mastery quickly impressed the customers. Without knowing his identity, they began asking him questions about kashrut, which he answered with precision and pedagogy. Meanwhile, the official town rabbi, less knowledgeable in the matter, saw the faithful turning away from him. Informed by his assistant, the town rabbi discovered that the “simple slaughterhouse employee” was giving halachic answers. Outraged, he convened a rabbinical court. Without seeking to justify himself, Rav Segal was sentenced to three days in public prison, near the synagogue, without anyone being allowed to speak to him...
