November 2012. "Oligopoly: The Energy Game," the program "Salvados" on La Sexta, for the first time in Spanish television history, unraveled a very tangled web. Why are electricity bills among the most expensive in Europe? What is this "tariff deficit"? Who sets electricity prices in this country? "In that program, we reached conclusions we couldn't have imagined, about what's happening in that sector and its lack of transparency," says Alba del Campo, director of "#Oligopoly 2," a documentary that picks up where Évole's program left off to continue providing answers. "#Oligopoly 2, The Electricity Empire Against Everyone" was filmed thanks to the initiative of the Platform for a New Energy Model, financed through crowdfunding, and premiered on Thursday, May 16, in 40 cities across Spain. According to Alba del Campo, a second part was necessary "because 'Oligopoly' opened Pandora's box. It opened a door, but we saw that there was much more that people need to know, because it's a very complex sector, and even many experts aren't clear on the rules. Furthermore, large electricity companies exert enormous pressure on the media. In the midst of a crisis, they invest huge amounts of money in advertising in these media outlets, and other voices can't be heard." The documentary delves into issues such as the continuous increases in electricity bills, the tariff deficit, the revolving door between politicians and electricity companies, and dependence on imported fossil fuels. The Platform for a New Energy Model believes that an informed citizenry is harder to manipulate and can guide its actions and consumption responsibly. With this documentary, they aim to help every citizen understand the key aspects of the electricity sector and decide whether the current model is sustainable and fair, or quite the opposite. They aim to analyze and present alternatives "based on a remarkably simple idea: it is essential to combat climate change through a new energy model that generates employment and empowers citizens to control energy."
