He Who Would Valiant Be - Organ Hymn Series #2

This is the second hymn in our Organ Hymn Series. This brilliant hymn tune was composed (arranged) by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1906 for use in the English Hymnal. He used a melody from a traditional song, 'Our Captain Cried All Hands', which he collected from the hamlet of Monk's Gate in West Sussex. That is why the hymn tune got its name, MONK'S GATE. This is the second hymn in the organ hymn series, where we not only perform some of the best-loved hymns in the world, but we also showcase a variety of hymns from different organs in churches throughout the UK. This great organ is from the Church of the Sacred Heart, Wimbledon, and was built by JW Walker & Sons Ltd in 1912 and is rare for instruments of its era in that it remains almost unaltered and retains its original pneumatic action.
