Ali Imran is the pivotal character in these Urdu spy stories. Imran is a bright young Oxford graduate with M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry. His comical and apparently incompetent persona hides his identity as part of secret service. The hero of Imran Series, Ali Imran, is secret agent who controls the Secret Service as X-2 but appears to be a non serious citizen working for the Secret Service as a freelancer. Except a handful of people, no one knows his status being the chief of the Service. The first Urdu spy novel of Imran Series written by Ibn e Safi was Khaufnaak Imarat (The Terrifying Building). This Urdu novel was published in October 1955. In early Urdu fiction books of Imran Series, Imran appears as a solo detective, however, later he is portrayed as the chief of Secret Service as X-2. Early Urdu jasoosi books in the series are complete novels. However, some jasoosi stories span over two or more Urdu fiction books. After Ibn e Safi’s death, many people attempted to write Imran Series but no one could continuously produced this kind of Urdu fiction novels except Mazhar Kaleem. Mazhar Kaleem produced more Imran series novels than Ibne Safi and has a wide readership. He has been writing these novels for the life time of IbneSafi and continuously produces Imran Series novels till date. Imran Series explains the workings of a country's Secret Service that operates from the capital of the country (supposed by many to be Karachi in Pakistan which was the capital when initial Imran Series novels were written). Although Ibn-e-Safi was careful to never explicitly state this, villains often refer to the country as the "one from South Asia".
