Set at the foot of the spectacular Winnats Pass, high above the village of Castleton, Speedwell Cavern takes you on an incredible underground boat journey. Work started in the Speedwell in 1771, in the hope of intercepting profitable lead veins , 20 years later by 1791 Around £14,000 was spent in the venture , which boasted an innovative subterranean canal designed to ease the ore extraction process. Tragically, one issue persisted - there was simply not enough lead in the mine. After only about £3,000 was extracted, the entire operation met a swift end.
