Wie man eine historische Laterne restauriert | SWR Handwerkskunst
Time has taken its toll on the historic lanterns in front of the facade of Rosenstein Palace in Stuttgart. They need to be professionally restored and conserved. Metal restorer Martin Wilperath demonstrates the complex work on a lantern that was created around 1830. 20 parts made of cast iron and 15 parts made of copper have to be restored in the blacksmith's workshop. During a preliminary examination, the restorer uses a paint sample to check the existing paint under a microscope and measures the thickness of the paint layer. He then uses a compressed air needle scaler to gently remove loose paint and dirt deposits. Corrosion residues are removed, new screw connections are made and the surfaces are preserved with a primer coat and top coat: These are just some of the numerous work steps that the metal restorer carries out professionally in consultation with the monument conservation department. Finally, Martin Wilperath installs the restored elements in front of Rosenstein Castle using historical techniques and places the lantern back in its original position.
