Old AC capacitors should never be thrown in the regular trash. Because they store electrical charges and may contain hazardous oils, they require safe handling and specific disposal. Follow these steps to safely dispose of your capacitor: 1. Safely Discharge It Before handling, the capacitor must be safely discharged.Disconnect: Turn off the power to your AC unit (pull the disconnect box or flip the circuit breaker).Discharge: Take an insulated screwdriver (ensure the handle is rubber or thick plastic). Touch the metal shaft of the screwdriver across the terminals simultaneously (e.g., Common to Fan, then Common to Hermetic). A small spark may occur, rendering the capacitor safe. 2.
