Cuts for some, protection of existing benefits for others: The new "Law to Stabilize Contribution Rates in Statutory Health Insurance" is causing controversy. Officially, it is intended to keep health insurance contributions stable. In reality, however, the savings of around 12 billion euros primarily affect those who pay contributions, while recipients of basic income support, half of whom are people without German citizenship, continue to receive their full healthcare benefits. It is precisely Friedrich Merz who, before becoming Chancellor, had sharply criticized this very injustice and promised reforms. Now, in the Chancellery, he is breaking this promise and allowing the federal government to pass a law that does not resolve the imbalance, but rather exacerbates it. The Baden-Württemberg Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians uses strong language in a letter to its members, openly speaking of dishonesty towards patients. Doctors are even being advised to consider staff reductions now, given the threat of fee losses of up to 18.8 percent. The consequence: According to calculations by the Federal Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, up to 46 million doctor visits could be lost annually.
