The spokesperson for the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), Gabriel Rufián, lamented on Wednesday the indictment of former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and said he was "heartbroken" because of the affection he felt for the politician. "Zapatero is a role model even if you never voted for him. He was an excellent president in terms of politics and public life. Those of us who knew and cared for Zapatero are devastated. I hope I have to face all this and apologize, but I can't lie," he said in an interview on the radio program "Hoy por Hoy" with Àngels Barceló. Rufián emphasized that Judge Calama "is not like Peinado and his persecution complex." "Many people are heartbroken today, and I sincerely hope it's all a lie," he reiterated. "This damages the left; we have to be aware that we're being judged by a different standard," he added, speaking on SER radio. The ERC spokesperson explained that the government should "provide details about the loan to Plus Ultra, explain it in a special plenary session, and offer much more explanation than simply stating their support for Zapatero." "For me, this was the most difficult question I've ever asked the government during a question period," he asserted. Furthermore, Rufián distinguished between the situation with Ábalos and Cerdán and the situation with Zapatero. "As soon as we see something on a large scale, and not just a few people pocketing money, we will ask the people to decide what needs to happen. We wouldn't support a motion of no confidence; that's not what we're focused on," he emphasized.
