Around the world in 80 monuments is a new journey by Artesplorando. Here I'll tell you about Christ the Redeemer. ▼▼CONTINUE BELOW▼▼ Christ the Redeemer, the largest Art Deco statue in the world, stands atop Corcovado Mountain, in the Tijuca National Forest, overlooking Rio de Janeiro. Thanks to its size, it can be seen from virtually every corner of the city. In 1800, Pedro Maria Boss, a Catholic priest, proposed the idea for the statue, which was revived in 1921 by the Catholic Circle of Rio, which asked for public donations to build a statue that "represented the religious strength of the country." Built between 1922 and 1931, the statue is 38 meters tall, including the pedestal, and 28 meters wide with its outstretched arms. It was created by sculptor Paul Landowski, with engineers Heitor Silva Costa and Albert Caquot. It is made entirely of reinforced concrete.
