Would They Leave Him Behind? Disney's Safety Team Gave Us Exclusive Backstage Access

What happens to a wheelchair user during a cruise ship emergency—especially when the elevators are unavailable? Cruise lines explain where passengers should assemble during the mandatory muster drill, but they rarely explain how someone who cannot use the stairs would actually get there. During our sailing aboard the Disney Destiny, we spoke with Francesca Grieco, Chief Officer Safety for Disney Cruise Line, who walked us through the emergency evacuation process for wheelchair users and other passengers who may need assistance. In this video, we explain: What to do when the cruise ship’s general alarm sounds How crew members locate and assist wheelchair users How an evacuation chair is used on the stairs What happens to power wheelchairs and mobility scooters How disabled passengers reach their muster stations How wheelchair users are transferred into lifeboats What to do if you cannot return to your cabin for medication, passports or a life jacket How Disney Cruise Line trains its crew for emergency evacuations Although our interview focused on Disney Cruise Line’s procedures, the questions raised in this video are important for any wheelchair user, disabled traveler, caregiver or family member considering a cruise. Emergency procedures may vary by cruise line, ship and the circumstances of an actual emergency, so passengers should always confirm the procedures for their specific sailing. Our goal is not to frighten anyone away from cruising. It is to replace the vague promise of “additional assistance” with a clearer understanding of what that assistance may actually involve. Cruise ship disasters such as the 2012 Costa Concordia tragedy—featured in the Netflix documentary Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea—are extremely rare. The disaster did, however, lead to significant changes in cruise ship safety procedures and emergency preparedness across the industry.
