In the monotonously humming heat, there's nothing to do and, in fact, nothing to expect. Paul waits anyway, without really knowing what for. Every now and then, he gets medical clearance to take the bus to San Diego. On the way, he listens to the bus driver's tired jokes, then cashes his monthly check at the bank: eighty dollars from the American government for doing nothing. Then he spends it on one of the few pleasures available: betting. He bets on horses, dogs, Gila monsters, or rattlesnakes. And maybe wins a small sum. Or loses. He drinks a few whiskeys, observes the desolate goings-on and the disheveled women around him, and then goes back home. And waits again...
