In 1947, not only the famous Book of Enoch was discovered in the Qumran caves, but also another, much lesser-known text—the Book of Giants. This is the only ancient manuscript in which the Nephilim speak not as monsters retold by others, but in the first person: they describe prophetic dreams of an impending flood and the realization that their sentence had already been pronounced. In this investigation, we examine what exactly the giants saw in their dreams—a stone slab with erased names, a carved-out garden, and water engulfing mountains—and why all three images point to the same thing. Special attention is given to the flight of Mahavai's messenger to Enoch "beyond the waters" and the answer that proved more terrifying than the sentence itself: it was not the power or threat of the Nephilim that mattered, but the fact that their very existence was a mistake of their fathers. We also explore a historical mystery: why the Qumran community copied this text alongside the sacred books—and why, centuries later, it was almost forgotten.
