Early Caribbean Electronic Explorations with Paula Juana

Copyright restrictions pose a challenge for our channel. YouTube automatically monetizes the songs in this mix, directing ad revenue to copyright owners. This means we can’t control the ads or their frequency. As a result, 99.9% of MAJ’s yearly viewership generates no income for us due to copyrighted music. MAJ’s mission is to share high-quality vinyl-only mixes. To continue, we need support to maintain our studio and cover expenses. Her sets move through Cumbia, Champeta, Salsa, Latin freestyle, House, Highlife, Soukous, Zouk and beyond, guided by a passion for rhythm, discovery and storytelling. With over a decade at Soundway Records and Publishing, Paula combines deep musical knowledge with a keen instinct for the dancefloor, weaving together rare gems, timeless classics and unexpected connections from across the globe. This mix traces the early moment when Caribbean dance music began building its own electronic infrastructure. Across Miami, Panama, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and the Dominican diaspora, artists in the late 80s and early 90s were experimenting with freestyle, reggae en español, underground rap, merengue house and hybrid club sounds — building parallel electronic scenes before reggaeton had a name. What connects these tracks isn’t genre, but infrastructure: cassette culture, sound systems, DIY studios, and communities discovering how electronic tools could carry Caribbean rhythm. This set is a snapshot of that transition — raw, playful, romantic, and street — a map of early Caribbean electronic exploration. The opening track, DJ Walaa’s “Chombo”, serves as a nod to the Caribbean influences running through this selection.   / paulajuana   ------------ Cameras: Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/ Mixer by Condesa Electronics Turntables: Technics 1210mk2 Stylus & Cartridges by Ortofon UK: Ortofon 2M Blue & Ortofon Concorde MKII Twin Club DJ https://www.henleyaudio.co.uk/brands/...
