The fungus causes premature death of the leaves and weakens the plant, resulting in decreased production and, sometimes, when the incidence is high, can cause total crop loss. Damage: Sigatoka disease infections occur on the young leaves of the plant, generally including leaves zero (candle), one, two, three and, exceptionally, four (leaves are counted from newest to oldest; leaf zero corresponds to the one that is not yet open). The initial infection is characterized by a slight discoloration in the form of a spot between the secondary veins of the second to the fourth leaf from the candle. This discolored spot widens, forming a yellow streak. Over time, these small streaks grow, forming necrotic, elliptical, elongated spots, arranged parallel to the secondary veins of the leaf. Finally, a lesion develops with a depressed center, gray in color, surrounded by a yellow halo. Control: Sigatoka disease is difficult to control.
