The German Shepherd, a working dog originally from Germany, was bred to herd sheep. Today, they're used for a wide variety of purposes, including search and rescue, protection, police and military work, exhibitions, and helping the disabled in their daily lives. The creation of different types of German Shepherds began when Germany was divided into East and West Germany in 1961, which lasted until 1989. This resulted in different breeding structures for German Shepherds. In 1906, German Shepherds were introduced to the United States, where unregulated breeding led to issues of authenticity. When the original bloodlines broke down, these dogs developed unwanted traits. Czechoslovakia also developed its own version of the breed when Germany was reunified.
