The Cyprus-flagged vessel was struck by an Iranian IRGC projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, causing a massive fire in the engine room. While 23 crew members were rescued, Karmarkar lost his life. India's Ministry of External Affairs has summoned the Iranian diplomat and strongly condemned the attack.
