Ducati 916 Superbike Full Restoration EP3

Welcome to Episode 3 of the Ducati 916 Restoration. In todays episode I do all of the bodywork and start wiring the bike back up. Now before i go on with my description I'll just drop in the link to my Patreon account and you can check that out if you'd like -   / rrcrestoration   So as usual before i can do anything i need to fully strip the parts im working on so i got the fairings off the shelf one by one and stripped them down and stored all the fixings in my usual fast food containers for safe keeping. After the panels were all stripped i could prep them for paint, the first thing to do was to put the fuel tank in the spray booth and turn on the extraction as my paint stripper is nasty stuff! once the paint stripper was applied i left it to do its thing and i set about the plastic pieces. Prepping these parts was easy as the paint work was a sound base for priming onto as the paint wasn't damaged and was applied really well painting on top of the original yellow also has the added benefit of if the bike ever gets a stone chip you will only see yellow underneath not primer or black plastic so thats always a nice thing. After sanding down all the panels i had to repair the broken part that i mentioned in episode 1 , to do this i used an old body shop technique of gluing the broken bit back into place and then reinforcing the repair by melting some stainless steel wire into the plastic and then sealing it in, fixing it like this actually makes it stronger than it originally was to begin with. Now with that done the paint stripper should have done its work and yup it had, all the paint had crinkled up leaving nothing but bare steel so all i had to do was give it a quick wire brushing and a good wash to decontaminate it in preparation for filling in a couple of wee dents that it had picked up. these were filled in just with standard body filler and sanded back to leave a perfectly smooth surface. Then came the painting stages, as you've seen me do this a million times before i don't think i need to describe this process again but what i will say is when painting anything yellow always be sure to use a white primer as the coverage with yellow paint is appalling and using a white base just helps to get full opacity that bit quicker. Once all the parts were primed, wet flatted, painted, stickered up and clear coated they were left to cure and i got on with the job of refitting the wiring loom to the rear end in preparation for the engine being fitted in the next episode as its just easier to get access to run all the wires just now.
