Public health in Córdoba is experiencing one of its deepest and most visible crises. Medical professionals at university hospitals, such as the National University Hospital and the National Maternity Hospital, have begun a five-day work stoppage to demand better salaries, which they describe as "inhumane." Journalistic investigations reveal a chilling reality: doctors with more than a decade of training receive salaries of barely 920,000 pesos per month, forcing them to work grueling shifts and multiple jobs to make ends meet. The most striking statistic to emerge from the protest is the symbolic comparison of their effort: one hour of work for a specialist doctor is equivalent to the price of a half-kilo package of yerba mate. This precarious situation affects not only tenured residents but also "fellows," graduates who work the same number of hours but without pay, under the promise of future specialization. Expert analysis warns that this situation is causing a "drainage" of specialists in the province. Residency positions are going unfilled, and young doctors are choosing to abandon their careers, pursue less risky but better-paying jobs (such as private transportation services), or emigrate to other countries in Latin America and Europe. "Córdoba is losing its pool of future specialists," the activists declared during a public demonstration in front of Plaza Colón. The editorial on "El Show del Lagarto" was unequivocal in pointing to political responsibility for this decline. It questioned the disparity between the income of healthcare professionals, who are responsible for saving lives under the risk of malpractice lawsuits, and the high salaries of legislators and officials who, in many cases, demonstrate a worrying lack of qualifications. The urgent demand is for salaries to be brought in line with provincial salaries (which are around 1,900,000 pesos) and for the provision of adequate scholarships for residents. While doctors are trying to make their struggle visible in the streets, the public is beginning to notice the lack of cardiologists, dermatologists, and surgeons on scheduled appointments.
