In gesprek over rouw met Annelies van Eijck - Hoe ga je om met ongewenst kinderloosheid

This week I'm sharing with you an interview with Annelies van Eijck from kindvrijleven.nl. When we think of loss, we quickly think of death. But there are also other moments in life when something is missed that was never really there. Like childlessness. Annelies had been on the pill for a long time when she and her boyfriend decided to stop taking it and start trying. To start a family together. After about 10 or 12 months of trying, Annelies went to her doctor for information. She was immediately referred to the hospital for tests. But right then, she discovered she had conceived naturally. The first ultrasound showed a heartbeat. But the second ultrasound showed no heartbeat. A miscarriage. At that moment, she knew: another pregnancy wouldn't be the same. Not as carefree. They decided to start a medical program to become pregnant. In 10 years, Annelies ultimately had 8 positive pregnancy results, but unfortunately, all without success. A medical procedure when you want to conceive has a huge impact on you. You're in the hospital incredibly often for checkups and hormone injections. It's incredibly tough, Annelies says. "My life was really on hold for those 10 years." During a third IVF treatment, Annelies and her partner decided not to continue. She couldn't take it anymore. At that moment, she knew: we're not going to be parents. It was an incredibly difficult and painful realization. Annelies cried a lot, but she also felt incredibly empowered. It's a very mixed feeling. On the one hand, it's liberating that you no longer have to do anything and have your life back. But it also left you with a huge void, knowing you're not going to be a parent. With love, Annemiek Discover more about grief: FREE WEBINAR 'HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH GRIEF?'
