[June 22 Meditation] Grace That Is Not Understood Does Not Build Up Community (1 Corinthians 14:1-19) A language known only to me, inspiration felt only to me, grace enjoyed only by me. We often lead our lives of faith using words that no one else understands. Paul asks: "If the person next to you does not understand, whom does that grace build up?" "It is better to speak five words in the church with understanding than to speak ten thousand words in tongues" (1 Corinthians 14:19). What matters is not the magnitude of the spiritual gift, but who can say "Amen" together. The language of the Cross has always been a language that the community could understand and hold onto together.
