Fifty years after that, Siebold learned firsthand that the exchange of knowledge among scholars in this country was a life-threatening crime. He was exiled, leaving behind his Japanese wife and young daughter. And at the end of the Edo period, Schliemann witnessed "a country more peaceful and prosperous than any other in the world."
