As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable of generating images, writing essays, composing music, and even critiquing artwork, that question no longer feels philosophical. It feels immediate. My recent conversation with artist Mona Brody offered one of the clearest and most compelling responses I’ve heard. Mona has spent a lifetime making art, teaching artists, and thinking deeply about the creative process. Her paintings—atmospheric abstractions filled with quiet mystery—are not simply images. They are the accumulation of decades of observation, experimentation, memory, and lived experience. It suggests that every creative act contains far more than information. It contains history. When an artist places a brush on canvas, the mark is influenced by thousands of invisible factors: joy and grief, confidence and uncertainty, physical movement, years of practice, cultural influences, personal memories, and the countless experiences that have shaped that individual.
