Stop Confusing Прошлый, Последний and Прошедший In Russian

Why does Russian have 3 different words for “last”? In this video, we’ll compare прошлый, последний, and прошедший and learn the difference between them. We’ll look at their etymology, how these words developed their meanings, and how to use them correctly in different contexts. You’ll learn why прошлый год, последняя встреча, and прошедшие события are not interchangeable and how to choose the right word like a native speaker. While editing this video, I realized there is actually one more important word: предыдущий. It comes from пред (“before”) + идти (“to go”) and is a present active participle used as an adjective, literally meaning “the one going before.” Unlike прошлый, which refers to a time period before the present (прошлый год means last year), предыдущий focuses on order and means “the one before another thing” (предыдущий урок means the lesson before this one, предыдущая страница means the page before this one).
