The Belt and Road Initiative is China's megaproject: a trade network between Asia, Africa, and Europe. More than 70 countries are already part of this new initiative that could change the old world order. China is investing in bridges, ports, railways, and highways around the world. The Belt and Road Initiative is costing the Chinese state hundreds of billions of euros. Chinese President Xi Jinping promises development and wealth not only for China but for the entire world. However, most of the infrastructure projects are being carried out by Chinese companies. After the Greek financial crisis, no European country wanted to invest in Greece. Only China saw the opportunity and bought shares in the port of Piraeus. Since 2016, they have held a majority stake in the port company. This is a fact that the Greek dockworkers' union still struggles to accept. In 2019, Italy joined the Belt and Road Initiative. Investments in the port of Trieste, in the north of the country, had already been agreed upon. However, critical voices, especially in Europe, are growing against this project.
