The Claudian Invasion - The Conquest of Britain I
The Claudian Invasion of Britain 43 AD, the Roman Conquest Begins... In 43 AD, the Roman Empire launched its full scale invasion of Britain under Emperor Claudius. Led by General Aulus Plautius and supported by four powerful legions (including one commanded by a young Vespasian), this campaign marked the beginning of Roman rule in Britain. In this episode of Rob’s Roman Britain, I dive deep into the political motivations behind the invasion, the military preparations, the dramatic battles of the Medway and Thames, and Claudius’s own brief but symbolic appearance in Britain, complete with war elephants. I also explore the role of Verica, the fate of Caratacus, and the founding of Camulodunum as the Roman provincial capital. This video is part one of my new Roman Conquest of Britain series, and sets the stage for future episodes on subjects such as, Vespasian’s campaign in the southwest, and the resistance of Caratacus in Wales.
