This video takes you back to Keelung from the 1970s to the 1990s— a city nestled between mountains and the sea, closely connected to its port. Maritime trade brought crowds and commerce, while streets and urban areas developed between land and sea. Through labor and daily life, Keelung revealed the unique rhythm of a harbor city. Back then in Keelung, the city center and areas around Zhong’er Road and Ren’ai 1st Road were always bustling. Though the streets were narrow, they were lively, with motorcycles, buses, and pedestrians weaving together to form the most authentic everyday scenes. From downtown streets to the area around the train station, crowds and traffic created the city’s familiar rhythm. Keelung Miaokou Night Market was one of the city’s soul centers. Pork thick soup, chicken rolls, and various street food stalls came alive under the night lights, drawing locals and travelers alike. The sounds and smells of markets and roadside vendors formed lasting memories of life in Keelung. The port was Keelung’s most important stage. From Pier 10 to views across the harbor, ships, crowds, and cargo moved in constant flow, recording the city’s close connection to the sea. In mining areas and along the harbor, the presence of miners and laborers formed an important chapter in Keelung’s development. From the 1970s to the 1990s, Keelung also experienced transformation. Development around the train station, construction of the cultural center, and improvements in tunnels and infrastructure gradually moved the city into a new phase. At the same time, labor protests and social issues reflected another side of that era. On the quieter side of life, the amusement facilities at Zhongzheng Park and the presence of students in schools added a sense of ease and everyday normalcy. From day to night, Keelung revealed a unique and familiar character between mountains, sea, and city streets.
