Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who visited Chitradurga on July 13 to pay state honours to the late former Rajya Sabha MP and senior Congress leader H. Hanumanthappa, held a key meeting at the Government Guest House to discuss the Hiriyur by-election. The very next day, KPCC President B.K. Hariprasad released the list of 28 in-charges. The list includes seven former ministers, 19 MLAs, and other senior leaders, who have been assigned responsibility for different parts of the constituency. The party aims to strengthen its grassroots organization and formulate an effective election strategy to ensure a Congress victory. Although the ruling Congress enjoys the support of over 140 MLAs in the Karnataka Assembly, the Hiriyur by-election has gained political significance as it is the first by-election after D.K. Shivakumar assumed office as Chief Minister. A victory is seen as crucial to reinforce public confidence in the government. The Vokkaliga community is considered a decisive voting bloc in Hiriyur, making it a key electoral challenge for the Congress. To build unity, D.K. Shivakumar had earlier invited ticket aspirants and district leaders to Bengaluru and urged them to remain united. During his visit to Chitradurga, he also instructed party leaders to work collectively for whichever candidate the party selects. The Congress has now appointed in-charges for all seven Zilla Panchayat divisions and the Hiriyur City Municipal Council, taking caste and regional equations into account. Nagendra, N.Y. Gopalakrishna and K.C. Veerendra Pappi. Preparations for D. Sudhakar Memorial Tribute The Congress is preparing to organize a tribute meeting in memory of former Minister D. Sudhakar in Hiriyur on July 26. MLAs B.G. Govindappa, T. Raghumoorthy and other leaders are expected to visit Hiriyur to finalize the venue and other arrangements. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, KPCC President B.K. Hariprasad, and several senior Congress leaders are expected to attend the event. The party hopes to connect emotionally with voters through the memorial programme. BJP–JD(S) Alliance Yet to Finalize Candidate Meanwhile, the NDA alliance is yet to announce its candidate for the Hiriyur by-election. Although discussions have reportedly taken place between BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra and JD(S) State President H.D. Kumaraswamy, no official decision has been made. However, BJP leader R. Rajanna has already opened his election office and begun campaigning. Former JD(S) candidate Ravindrappa, Pilali Jayanna, and several others are also moving around the constituency claiming to be the NDA's probable candidate. With the constituency having previously elected both BJP and JD(S) candidates, political observers are closely watching which party will ultimately secure the NDA ticket.
