The Battle of Barnet explained on its 550th anniversary
Paul Baker, City of London guide of Barnet Walks, explains the history of the Battle of Barnet on its 550th anniversary year. Barnet Council has funded cleaning and conservation works to restore Hadley Highstone, the monument commemorating the conflict, to its original state. The Grade II-listed plinth-mounted stone obelisk can be found at the junction of Kitts End Road and the A1000 in Chipping Barnet, and it dates back to 1740. The battle was fought on Easter Sunday – 14 April 1471 – and a socially distanced ceremony was held at the monument to commemorate its 550th anniversary earlier this month.
