In all other cases, the commandment "live by them [the commandments], and do not die by them" (Vayikra 18:5) obliges one to violate a commandment in order to preserve life. This emphasizes the sanctity of life given by the Creator. Voluntary sacrifice of the righteous: At the same time, the Talmud mentions that especially righteous people can voluntarily accept martyrdom ("to sanctify the Name of the Almighty") even for the sake of observing a less strict commandment. This is permitted in situations where their act, becoming a public act of faith, can strengthen the entire nation. Voluntary self-sacrifice in itself is permitted, but if it does not serve this higher purpose, a person may be considered guilty of neglecting their own life. Overcoming Human Nature: The capacity for complete self-denial is seen as a manifestation of the divine, supra-natural essence of the Jewish soul. This quality violates the basic instinct of self-preservation, proving that within a person there is a spark that transcends the material world. Faith in the Creator is so strong that for the believer, rejecting Him is true self-destruction. Source in Infinity ("Ein Sof"): The deepest source of this power, according to the Hasidic reading of Kabbalah, is found not in the created worlds, but in the essence of the Creator Himself—Infinity ("Ein Sof").
