Native Icon: Felipe Lopez, NYC Basketball Legend

Coming over from the Dominican Republic at the age of 14, Felipe Lopez quickly created a buzz around New York City with his exciting brand of basketball -- one that earned him the title “Spanish Michael Jordan.” Lopez went on to become a high school All-American at Rice High School in the Bronx, and was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a college freshmen in 1994. Although his career didn't pan out as many had hoped, Lopez has taken the game of basketball to new heights by reaching the youths of New York’s inner city communities through education and guidance.
