Today, we're celebrating the restoration and review of a book about early 19th-century morals! A handwritten note on the endpaper states that this publication is useful not only for young readers—many consider "Light in a Small Form" to be children's literature—but also for "the elderly, prone to weaknesses..." That's quite an accurate statement! This work by the French writer Jean-Georges Masselin, written at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, is a collection of short moralizing stories. Each chapter of the book has a pair of opposites; for example, a story about anger is accompanied by a story about leniency, a story about cowardice by a story about courage, and so on. "What is good and what is bad" is demonstrated through specific examples—plots with intense conflicts and vividly drawn characters. The contrasts, despite their somewhat schematic nature, further enhance the author's message. The illustrations, of course, make it even more vivid. By the beginning of the 19th century, book illustration had already become a fully-fledged genre of fine art, used by many famous artists. Now, illustrations no longer "serve" the text but can be a complete, independent statement by the graphic artist or engraver. In the 1821 edition of "Light in Small View...," the engravings are also quite autonomous: thanks to the same contrasts and narrative, the author's message is easily understood, and the didacticism inherent in many children's books is diluted with a casual, engaging atmosphere.
