FAO ADG Visits Jamaica to strengthen post-hurricane recovery support

FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, Rene Orellana Halkyer, made his first official visit to Jamaica, meeting farmers and fishers in communities impacted by Hurricane Melissa. The ADG was joined by Franklin Witter, State Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining; Ambassador Shorna Kay Richards, Under-Secretary for Multilateral Affairs, Minstry for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade; Marianne Ziss, Ambassador of France; and Gaspard Van Goethem, from Embassy of Belgium. Following the hurricane, FAO supported Jamaica through damage assessments, satellite monitoring and technical cooperation, allocating USD 350,000 for early recovery support. FAO and the Government of Jamaica are also advancing the USD 50 million ADAPT Jamaica project and implementing emergency support for artisanal fishers and smallholder farmers.
