A Dying Man Wrote One Letter Before He Died — John Wayne Was The Only One Who Came, Arizona 1953

#OldHollywood #VintageHollywood #ClassicHollywood September 1953. Redemption, Arizona. A town of eight hundred people in the Verde Valley. Silas Croft has been there eleven years. He owns the land north of the Hargrove forty acres and the land south of it. Without the middle parcel his portfolio has a hole and his Phoenix banker knows it. He has tried buying it twice. John Hargrove Senior refused both times. Now John Senior is dying. His son Cole came home from Korea in 1952 with a Bronze Star and a left shoulder that will never sit right and forty acres he intends to keep. His brother Wade is twenty-four with restless hands and $800 in gambling debt he cannot pay. Croft sits Wade down. Pours two glasses. Explains that the debt can be managed. All Wade needs to do is pass along Cole's monthly supply schedule. Wade says no. Loses more money. Comes back. The second time he stays to the end. On July 15th Cole's barn is searched by Sheriff Roy Denton, who has been on Croft's payroll for four years. The items found match Cole's incoming shipment exactly. No arrest — Croft is too careful for that. Just three quiet conversations at the hardware store. By August the bank has declined Cole's loan. The feed suppliers have stopped his credit. Cole is six months from losing the ranch and does not know why. Clara Marsh watches Wade watch Cole and sees something behind his eyes that she cannot name. Croft tips his hat to her on Main Street and tells her Cole's problems could disappear if the right person asked him to. She tells him to leave. He smiles and goes. She does not tell Cole. Cole has enough to carry. In California, John Hargrove Senior writes a two-page letter in a shaking hand to an address he has kept for thirty years. The letter arrives three days after he dies. The man who reads it is still in costume on a film set. He folds it and drives four hundred miles. Nobody in Redemption is looking for him. He goes to the ranch. He goes to the doctor. He goes to the hotel. He goes to the billiard hall. He goes to the sheriff. He goes to Croft. Each conversation takes him one step closer to a piece of paper in a coat pocket that Clara finds one morning and sits with for a long time before she knows what to do. The forty acres stayed in the family. Wade was the best man at the wedding. Two letters are framed on the ranch house wall now. One in an old man's shaking hand. One in plain certain print, signed J.W. This video is an original dramatic storytelling production. Historical events and dialogue are reconstructed for narrative purposes. #JohnWayne #TheDuke #ClassicHollywood #OldHollywood #VintageHollywood #AmericanLegend #GoldenAgeOfHollywood #JohnWayneStories #KoreanWar #VeteranStories #WesternJustice #ArizonaHistory #AmericanKindness
