Y Start-Delta Run Reduced Voltage Starters (Full Lecture)
In this lesson we'll examine Y start-Delta run reduced voltage starters designed to limit inrush current and reduce mechanical stresses to the driven load. Y start-Delta run reduced voltage starting methods are suitable only for fully customizable motors in which both ends of an individual winding are accessible (ex: 6 and 12 lead motors). The Y start mode exposes the windings to the comparatively less line to neutral voltage, whereas the delta run mode exposes the windings to the comparatively higher line to line voltage. Y start-Delta run reduced voltage starters are characterized by an open transition from start to run in which the motor windings are briefly deenergized.
