The Finale!!! I’m Mailing Photos off to Family & Friends | Curating 50 Years of Photos
After two years of sorting, purging, organizing, and rethinking what memories I truly want to keep… this is the finale of my Curating 50 Years of Photos series. In this final photo project video, my mom joined me as I worked through the last of the family photos, finished my storage system, and started mailing photos out to relatives who will appreciate them more than I will. Over the course of this series, I slowly let go of bulky photo albums, organized decades of memories in chronological order, and created a simple storage solution using mini bins inside larger cases by year. In this finale alone, I decluttered more than 600 photos — more than I’ve ever let go of in a single episode. This video is really about something I think a lot of us wrestle with when it comes to sentimental clutter: just because I love someone doesn’t mean I need to keep every single picture of them. A lot of these photos are of extended family members my own children don’t even know, which means if something were to happen to me, they’d be the ones stuck with boxes of photos they don’t recognize and wouldn’t want to sort through. So instead of stuffing them back into closets or bins, I’m passing them along to cousins, aunts, nieces, and other relatives who may actually treasure them. My mom also helped me sort through photos from her side of the family, and together we decided who should receive what. It felt like the perfect way to wrap up this chapter. What started as a mission to clear out an overstuffed closet full of photo albums turned into a two-year project of curating 50 years of memories. And now that it’s finally done, I can move on to the next step: finishing that closet and turning it into the simple, functional space I wanted all along. If you’ve been following this series, be sure to come back next month because I’ll be tackling the closet makeover that started this whole project in the first place. If you’ve ever struggled with sentimental clutter, old family photos, inherited keepsakes, or the guilt of letting things go, I hope this video encourages you to keep the memories that matter most and release the rest with love.
