It started raining during the night, and the sea from the river was so muddy that fishing was impossible, so we moved locations. We found a promising surf spot, but all we caught were small flounder. We moved again and fished at Muroran Port. We thought there were no more flounder in the port, but we caught a new personal record! The black-headed flounder (Platypleura fuscescens) is a type of flounder commonly found along the northern coast of Japan, and is a particularly important fishery resource in Hokkaido. Habitat Primarily distributed along the coasts from Hokkaido to northern Tohoku. Prefers sandy or muddy bottoms at depths of 10-200m. A benthic fish that lives on the seabed, it sometimes buries itself halfway in the sand to conceal itself. Diet Black-headed flounders are carnivorous, feeding on organisms found on the seabed. Polychaetes (worms) Small crustaceans (shrimp and crabs) Mollusks Small fish As they grow, the proportion of small fish they prey on increases. Growth and Lifespan Growth is relatively slow. Adults reach a total length of about 30-40cm, but some can grow to nearly 50cm. Lifespan is estimated to be around 10-20 years. Reproduction Spawning season varies by region, but it is mainly from winter to spring (around January to April). Spawning occurs in relatively shallow coastal waters. After hatching, the larvae spend some time floating, then metamorphose, their eyes move to the right side of their body, and they begin to live on the seabed. Characteristics As the name "Kurogashira" (black-headed flounder) suggests, its head may appear somewhat dark. Both eyes are on the right side of its body (a right-eyed flounder). It prefers cold seas and is well-adapted to low-temperature environments. Ecological Role The Kurogashira flounder plays a role as a mezzo-predator in the marine ecosystem, regulating the population of benthic organisms. On the other hand, it is also a food source for larger fish and marine mammals, making it an important part of the marine food web.
