Ehebruch mit der Gattin des Bürgermeisters: Casanova im Kölner Karneval
True Crimes and Exciting Criminal Cases from Cologne and the Surrounding Area At a masked ball during Carnival in 1760, Casanova met Maria Ursula Columba zum Pütz, the wife of Cologne's mayor, and fell in love with her. To seduce her, he had to extend his visit to the Rhineland before the two finally agreed to commit adultery. First, the bon vivant from Venice had to spend hours curled up in the confessional. After the church was locked, he is said to have spent further hours in a small room with rats. However, he was richly rewarded. Casanova recounts a "delightful night" in his memoirs. For seven hours, "desire was constantly renewed." Adultery was not the only crime Casanova committed here. He assaulted a Cologne newspaper editor and took the law into his own hands. He may have been in Cologne as a spy. On his third visit, he was likely in the city to collect debts. Casanova had to fend off a robbery attempt and appear in court for fraud. And at every festive occasion, he was the star, because he could entertainingly recount his spectacular escape from the dreaded Lead Chambers in the Doge's Palace in Venice. He had been imprisoned there for allegedly being a troublemaker and Freemason, and for blaspheming the "holy religion." Our guests on True Crime Cologne are Casanova expert Ansgar Bach and carnival expert Monika Salchert. This episode also features the Church of the Poor in Cologne, where Casanova hid before his wild night with "Mimi."
