William Orpen was born in Ireland and was a precocious talent from an early age, destined for greatness. He would find himself as heir apparent to John Singer Sargent, who promoted the young painter as one of the finest artists in Britain. Orpen would serve in the British army as a war artist, and his many portraits of the period would gain him great honor and riches.
