The Vic Bay Quad Surf Contest | 50 Years of South African Surfing Tradition Join me as I take a road trip four hours down the South African coast from J-Bay to one of the country's longest-running surf competitions, held in what I can only describe as the perfect setup. Victoria Bay is one of South Africa's most consistent surf breaks. Nestled between two steep valleys, this small bay is perfectly positioned to capture almost every swell that rolls in from the Southern Ocean. Its famous boulder-bottom right-hand point break offers long, playful rides before wrapping into a fun beach break, making it one of the country's true hidden gems. The Vic Bay Quad is a legendary contest that has been running for over 50 years. Throughout its rich history, it has probably seen almost every great South African surfer paddle out for at least a few heats. This isn't a junior event—it's a contest for the grown-ups. From the Open Division right through to the Over 50s and beyond, the standard of surfing remains incredibly high. Many of these competitors still have an impressive combination of fitness, style, and skill that proves surfing really is a sport for life. I travelled down with Surf Stream, a live-stream production company based in J-Bay, to help film the event and operate cameras. But I was also given another role... commentary. And I absolutely loved it. Standing behind the microphone brought back memories of touring through Holland, Germany, England and South Africa years ago with my band. Holding a mic again felt strangely familiar. For a few moments, I felt like a rock star all over again! All jokes aside, this weekend reminded me why I love surfing so much. It wasn't just about the waves—it was about the people. Catching up with old friends, making new ones, and sharing a few laughs along the way. Surfing has one of the most unique communities in the world. It spans generations, brings complete strangers together, and creates friendships that can last a lifetime. I genuinely love making these videos, and it's because of all of you, that I continue packing the car before sunrise, driving hundreds of kilometres, and documenting the incredible surf, people, and places that make our South African coastline so special.
