A time when countless women lost their lives to a ruthless hunt fueled by superstition and a desire for control. My story today begins with a booklet I found almost by chance, entitled "The Trial of Maddalena Lazari, Convicted and Executed as a Witch in Bormio in 1673." It is the 19th-century transcription of a 134-page manuscript containing the original documents of the court that sentenced her to death.
