Las Piñas road excavation site collapses, 2 workers missing | ABS-CBN News

This is a developing story. Rescue operations continued Monday after a portion of a road excavation site collapsed in a subdivision in Barangay Pamplona Dos, Las Piñas City on Sunday afternoon, leaving two workers missing. Initial information from authorities showed that seven workers were at the excavation site along Aquarius Street when the ground caved in at around 2 p.m. Four workers managed to get out of the collapsed pit, while another sustained injuries. Two workers remained trapped and were still being searched for as of Monday. Authorities from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Las Piñas City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) continued search and rescue operations at the scene. Media members were restricted from the collapse site, and the project contractor remains unavailable for comment. A woman who identified herself as the live-in partner of one of the missing workers said she was only informed of the incident around 9 p.m., about seven hours after it happened, by a person who introduced herself as a human resources representative of the company. “Ibig kong sabihin, kung alas-dos nangyari, bakit kung hindi ko pa binuksan 'yung account ng asawa ko, hindi ko malalaman? Na ibig sabihin, sinasagip na siya sa ilalim,” she said. She questioned the safety measures at the excavation site. “Ang tanong ko, nasaan ang safety nila?” she said. The woman said her partner had previously shown her videos of the excavation and had told her the work was dangerous. “Delikado 'yan, sabi ko. Kasi wala kayong safety kahit tali man lang na pwede kayong hilahin,” she recalled telling him. She also called for an investigation into the incident. “Ang gusto ko lang naman pong mangyari ay paimbestigahan. Nasaan ang safety ng mga tao?” she said. Meanwhile, the uncle of another missing worker, a 21-year-old from Isabela province, said he learned about the incident from a relative about two hours after the collapse. He said an engineer told them the excavation had reached a depth of around 14 to 15 meters. “Nakita ko, inassess ko kasi ako, civil engineer din ako by profession. I assessed it, parang ang pag-expect kasi pahaba siya, akala ko pahaba. 'Yun pala, palalim,” he said. “Tinanong ko kung anong status na, anong depth na noong hinuhukay nila. Ang sabi sa akin, around 14 to 15 meters. So napakataas na.” He also questioned the lack of information being provided to the families. “Ito ang kinakasama ng loob namin: bakit parang gusto nila itago,” he said. ABS-CBN News has reached out to the project contractor, but the company has yet to issue a statement as of posting. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the collapse as search and rescue operations continue.
