Feel the Powerful Presence of Lord Shiva | Shivoham Shivoham | Ancient Nirvana Shatakam Chant The Nirvana shatkam, also known as Atma shatkam, is a non-dual Saivite composition consisting of six verses or ślokas, attributed by the early modern Advaita Vedanta tradition to Adi Shankara. Verse 1: Negation of the Internal Instruments Mano-buddhy-ahankāra-chittāni nāham, na cha shrotra-jihve na cha ghrāṇa-netre | Na cha vyoma-bhūmir na tejo na vāyuḥ, chidānanda-rūpaḥ shivo'ham shivo'ham || Meaning: I am not the mind, the intellect, the ego, or the memory. I am not the ears, the tongue, the nose, or the eyes. I am not the space, the earth, the fire, or the wind (the five elements). I am the form of consciousness and bliss; I am Shiva, I am Shiva. Verse 2: Negation of Vital Airs and Body Layers Na cha prāṇa-sangyo na vai pañcha-vāyuḥ, na vā sapta-dhātur na vā pañcha-koshaḥ | Na vāk-pāṇi-pādam na chopastha-pāyu, chidānanda-rūpaḥ shivo'ham shivo'ham || Meaning: I am not the prana (vital breath), nor the five vital airs. I am not the seven constituents of the body (dhatus), nor the five sheaths (koshas). I am not the organs of speech, the hands, the feet, nor the organs of procreation or excretion. I am the form of consciousness and bliss; I am Shiva, I am Shiva. Verse 3: Negation of Emotions and Desires Na me dveṣha-rāgau na me lobha-mohau, mado naiva me naiva mātsarya-bhāvaḥ | Na dharmo na chārtho na kāmo na mokṣhaḥ, chidānanda-rūpaḥ shivo'ham shivo'ham || Meaning: I have no hatred or attachment, no greed or delusion. I have no pride or jealousy. I have no duty (dharma), no wealth (artha), no desire (kama), and no liberation (moksha). I am the form of consciousness and bliss; I am Shiva, I am Shiva. Verse 4: Negation of Karma and Experience Na puṇyaṃ na pāpaṃ na saukhyaṃ na duḥkhaṃ, na mantro na tīrthaṃ na vedā na yajñāḥ | Ahaṃ bhojanaṃ naiva bhojyaṃ na bhoktā, chidānanda-rūpaḥ shivo'ham shivo'ham || Meaning: I have neither merit (punya) nor demerit (papa), neither pleasure nor pain. I do not need chants (mantras), holy places (tirthas), scriptures (Vedas), or rituals (yajnas). I am neither the experience, nor the object of experience, nor the enjoyer. I am the form of consciousness and bliss; I am Shiva, I am Shiva. Verse 5: Negation of Death and Dualities Na mṛtyur na shaṅkā na me jāti-bhedaḥ, pitā naiva me naiva mātā na janma | Na bandhur na mitraṃ gurur naiva shiṣhyaḥ, chidānanda-rūpaḥ shivo'ham shivo'ham || Meaning: I have no fear of death, no caste distinctions. I have no father, no mother, and I was never born. I have no relatives, no friends, no guru, and no disciple. I am the form of consciousness and bliss; I am Shiva, I am Shiva. Verse 6: The Ultimate Assertion Ahaṃ nirvikalpo nirākāra-rūpo, vibhutvāch-cha sarvatra sarvendriyāṇām | Na chāsangataṃ naiva muktir na meyaḥ, chidānanda-rūpaḥ shivo'ham shivo'ham || Meaning: I am devoid of all dualities (nirvikalpa) and I am formless. I exist everywhere, pervading all senses. I am neither attached, nor am I "free" (as I was never bound). I am beyond measurement.
